Class Activity
Solvent, solute, solubility.
As a class, we will, through various stations, create a chart of solubility. What will dissolve a regular marker? A sharpie? Fabric dye?
Sketchbook assignment
Using your sample papers (cut up coffee filter), try ten variations on a chromatography theme. Experiment with types of ink and solvent. Only successful ink/solvent combos will be accepted! For example: do not pair water proof Sharpie marker with a water solvent. Label each sample!
Can you explain the process...
Using the words listed below, write an explanation of the process in your sketchbook alongside your ten samples. Highlight the terms as they are used. Intersperse your descriptive words...analysis may be QUALITATIVE.

Final Project
Using your sketchbook research, create a larger-scale artwork using the chromatography technique. Mastery objectives are listed below:
Development Sketches
Range of ideation based on scientific concept.
Idea growth shown from initial through developed.
Complexity of Design
Thoughtfulness of composition or function.
Originality of intent and expression with scientific medium.
Craftsmanship through Research
Skill and complexity shows practice and experimentation to thoroughly understand the medium.
Understanding of art and scientific concept support each other and facilitate design.
